Eurasia Conference on Chemical Sciences

The 12th Eurasia Conference on Chemical Sciences (Eurasia-12, EuAsC2S-12) was held from 16–21 April 2012 on the island of Corfu, Greece—the first time a conference in the series was held in Europe.
The first Eurasia Conference was held in Bangkok in 1988. Originally known as the First Eurasia Conference on Chemistry of Solutions, it emerged from the shared vision of Bernd M. Rode, Hitoshi Ohtaki, and Ivano Bertini who aimed to deepen relationships among chemists in the Eurasian supercontinent, and support them with the help of chemists throughout the world. The conference series encourages interactions among eminent scientists and young chemists, especially those from developing countries.

Eurasia 12 was held in Greece in order to attract more European scientists and make the series more popular in Europe. Nick Hadjiliadis, professor at the University of Ioannina, was the chair of the local organizing committee, while Susumu Kitagawa acted as the chair of the international organizing committee. The conference counted 393 active participants from 57 countries. Seven junior scientists from different countries were able to attend by way of scholarships sponsored by IUPAC. In addition, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation's Ministerial Standing Committee on Scientific and Technological Cooperation (www.comstech.org) sponsored the attendance of four young chemists.

At the opening ceremony, the attendees were welcomed by I. Lagaris (vice rector of the University of Ioannina, Greece), S. Kitagawa, N. Hadjiliadis, J. Reedijk (IUPAC representative), and B.M. Rode (University of Innsbruck, Austria, one of the founders of this series of conferences).

The conference was organized in 14 sessions:

  • Bioinorganic Chemistry
  • Clinical Biochemistry and Molecular Diagnostics
  • Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Drugs Design
  • Environmental and Green Chemistry
  • Physical Chemistry and Spectroscopy
  • Theoretical and Computational Chemistry
  • Organometallic Chemistry and Catalysis
  • Coordination Chemistry and Inorganic Polymers
  • Analytical and Solution Chemistry
  • Organic Synthesis and Natural Products
  • Food Chemistry
  • Supramolecular Chemistry and Nanomaterials
  • Polymer Science
  • Chemical Education

The scientific program consisted of nine plenary lectures and nearly 200 keynote and session lectures and oral presentations. There were two poster sessions featuring 220 posters. The plenary lectures were of excellent quality and covered most of the themes:

  • Akira Suzuki (Nobel Laureate), "Cross-Coupling Reactions of Organoboron Compounds"
  • Stefan Baffonni, "Protein-Protein Interactions in Life Processes"
  • Susumu Kitagawa, "Evolution of Porous Coordination Polymers/Metal-Organic Frameworks"
  • George Christou, "Supramolecular Aggregation of Manganese Clusters: Linkage of Single-Molecular Magnets into Rectangles and Other Motifs"
  • Peter J. Sadler, "Organometallic and Photoactivatable Precious Metal Anticancer Complexes"
  • Charalambos Kalodimos, "Structural and Dynamic Basis for the Assembly of Large Protein Machineries by NMR"
  • Jim Thomas, "Multifunctional in Cellular Probes"
  • Bernd M. Rode, "Chemical Evolution of Peptides and Proteins and the Origin of Life"

The conference was held in a friendly and stimulating atmosphere at the Hotel Corfu Chandris. The interest of the participants was clearly reflected in the stimulating discussions, which extended throughout the day and culminated in afternoon poster presentations.

Organizers and attendees felt that Eurasia-12 was very successful scientifically and achieved its goals. The high-quality speakers, most from developed countries, were able to meet scientists from developing countries, especially young scientists and graduate students.

A prize committee, coordinated by the vice chair George Varvounis, bestowed prizes and awards for the best oral and poster presentations by young scientists. Awards included books and journal subscriptions sponsored by Springer, RSC New Journal of Chemistry, and Australian Journal of Chemistry.

The conference included a number of successful social arrangements. A day-trip included excursions to Nekromantio (oracle of dead), Dodoni (oracle), and Ioannina, with lunch at the university campus restaurant. The conference concluded with banquet in a Greek Taverna. The visit to the University of Ioannina was combined with the inauguration of the Nobel Laureate Prof A. Suzuki as an honorary Doctor of the Department of Chemistry.

The chair of the organizing committee was Emeritus Professor Nick Hadjiliadis, the secretary was Sotiris Hadjikakou, the vice chair was George Varvounis, and members were Nick Kourkoumelis and Gerasimos Maladrinos. A group of graduate students from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Ioannina assisted the organizers and delegates by all means and at all times.
Eurasia-13 is scheduled for early 2015 in Bangalore, India.
