Heteroatom Chemistry

The 10th International Conference on Heteroatom Chemistry (ICHAC-10) was held in Uji, Kyoto, Japan, 20–25 May 2012. In total, 371 scientists from 28 countries attended.

The ICHAC is a well-established international forum for the presentation and discussion of research results relating to the diverse fields of heteroatom chemistry. The major themes of ICHAC-10 covered synthesis, structure and reactivity (including catalysis), theoretical methods, and materials. The conference program contained 7 plenary and 17 invited lectures, as well as 43 short communications and 154 poster presentations. Plenary lectures were given by Wolf-Walther du Mont (Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany), Vladimir Gevorgyan (University of Illinois, USA), Kimoon Kim (Pohang University of Science and Technology, Korea), Shigeru Nagase (Institute for Molecular Science, Japan), Philip P. Power (University of California Davis, USA), Zuowei Xie (The Chinese University of Hong Kong, China) and Yohsuke Yamamoto (Hiroshima University, Japan).

All presentations were of the highest quality and discussed the latest developments in their respective areas of expertise. The friendly and warm atmosphere of the conference ensured extended discussions afterwards, resulting in an unhindered scientific exchange among all participants.

ICHAC meetings have so far been held in several countries and have now, with ICHAC-10, returned to the very first host country Japan. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the ICHAC meetings, a special ICHAC-10 Memorial Session was prepared in addition to the plenary lectures described above. This special single session consisted of three invited lectures delivered by Takayuki Kawashima (Gakushuin University, Japan), Marian Mikołajczyk (Polish Academy of Sciences, Poland), and Albert Padwa (Emory University, USA). Each speaker was given the opportunity to present his or her personal scientific achievements alongside comments on the past and the future of the ICHAC series.

The social events included a welcome reception, a conference banquet, and a half-day excursion with four separate tours to chose from. Participants had the chance to visit Nara (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Arashiyama (including a boat tour on the Hozu River), the Toei Uzumasa Eigamura Movie Museum, or the Ise Grand Shrine. Many participants joined the excursions and enjoyed a very exciting afternoon, which was rounded off by a communal diner. Moreover, a traditional "Green Tea Ceremony" was prepared, in which participants were able to directly experience this traditional Japanese ritual and enjoyed drinking Japanese tea.

The next ICHAC meeting (ICHAC-11) will be organized by Annie-Claude Gaumont ([email protected]) and held at the Université de Caen, France, in June 2014.

Yoshiyuki Mizuhata <[email protected]> is an assistant professor in the Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University. Norihiro Tokitoh <[email protected]> is a professor in the Institute for Chemical Research, Kyoto University and was chair of the Organizing Committee for ICHAC-10.
