4th International Chemical Assembly: Green Chemistry’2012

The 4th International Chemical Assembly: Green Chemistry’2012 (ICA-2012) was held 23–26 October 2012 in Moscow.

Until recently, sustainable, or green, chemistry has not been as popular in Russia as in many other countries. However, Russian chemists have come to understand that sustainable development, and even the question of our survival, is based, to a significant extent, on the "greening" of chemistry in a scientific and industrial respect. This is why the 4th International Chemical Assembly was dedicated to green chemistry. Sponsored by IUPAC and UNIDO, the exhibition was held 23–26 October 2012 in Moscow.

In his address to participants, Professor M. Egorov, academician of the Russian Academy of Science (RAS), said "At the first look, green chemistry is the chemistry of common sense, but in fact it is the new ideology, new culture of performing the chemical transformations, which will make possible the harmonization of the relationship between the humankind and the environment."

The exhibition included 130 firms from 10 countries. ICA-2012 was free for all visitors who registered online. More than 300 participants presented about 200 reports at this conference; the book of abstracts was published in two volumes. Attendees were attracted not only by the exhibition itself, but also by the broad and interesting business program that included the following events:

  • International Theoretical and Practical Conference "Green Economics and Sustainable Development" to commemorate Valery Legasov, the academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences
  • Theoretical and Practical Conference on Supercritical Fluids Technologies
  • The conference "Chemical Technology and Biotechnology of New Materials and Products" dedicated to the 80th anniversary of P. Sarkisov, academician of RAS
  • The seminar "UNIDO Business Model "Chemistry Leasing as the Instrument for the Optimization of the Chemicals Use and Commercialization of Innovations"
  • The conference "The Production and Use of Modern Personal Security Equipment for Industrial Facilities in View of Modern Environmental Regulations"
  • The conference "Green Logistics in Chemistry and Oil-Gas-Complex"
  • The round table "Green Chemistry. Global Challenges—Request for Innovations"
  • The round table "Innovative Educational and Enlightenment Programs in the Field of Green Chemistry; Inclusion of the Elements of Green Chemistry into General Chemistry Courses, the Promotion of Green Chemistry Ideology through Internet and Mass-media"
  • All-Russian Competition of Innovative Works in the Field of Green Chemistry
  • many seminars organized by the firms participating in the exhibition, among them the seminar "The Systems for Drinking Water Conditioning, Treatment, Decontamination, and Conservation Using Ozone," organized by TIMIS LLC, Moscow, and Chemistry Department of M. Lomonosov Moscow State University.

The main organizers of the business program were the Chemistry Department of M. Lomonosov Moscow State University (Dean V. Lunin), Scientific-Educational Centre "Sustainable-Green Chemistry" (V. Lunin, E. Lokteva, I. Perminova), Institute of Chemistry and Problems of Sustainable Development of D. Mendeleyev University of Chemical Technology of Russia (N. Tarasova), International Independent University of Environmental and Political Sciences (V. Menshikov), D. Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society, the journal Supercritical Fluids: Theory and Practice (O. Parenago) and the Russian Chemists Union.

IUPAC President Kazuyuki Tatsumi delivers a talk at the Opening Ceremony of the 4th International Chemical Assembly: Green Chemistry '2012.

IUPAC President Kazuyuki Tatsumi participated in the Opening Ceremony alongside many representatives of Russian authorities and international organizations and firms: I. Volodin, head of Water Recourses Department of UNIDO; S. Korotkov, head of the Centre of International Industrial Collaboration of UNIDO in Russia; N. Tarasova, elected member on the IUPAC Bureau and Executive Committee; V. Gusev, vice-head of the Committee on Agrarian-Food Politics and Nature Management of the Council of the Russian Federation; V. Doronin, vice-head of the Industrial Committee of the Russian State Duma; V. Lunin, dean of the Chemistry Department of M. Lomonosov Moscow State University; and H. Boiteux, Waters Corporation, France.

During the Opening Ceremony, Tatsumi presented IUPAC prizes to the young winners of the All-Russian Competition of Innovative Works in the Field of Green Chemistry. Certificates, the IUPAC Green Book, and the two-year subscription to Chemistry International were awarded to I. Kuchurov (Zelinsky Institute of Organic Chemistry RAS, Moscow), A. Shlyakhtin (Chemistry Department of Lomonosov Moscow State University), and J. Demidova (Boreskov Institute of Catalysis SB RAS, Novosibirsk)."

The following plenary lectures were presented at the Conference on Supercritical Fluids Technologies: F. Gumerov (Kazan, Russia) "The Principles of Green Chemistry and Supercritical Fluid Technologies"; V. Karpov (Troitsk, Russia) "Supercritical Fluid Technologies for Biomedicine and Pharmaceutical Industry"; A. Vostrikov (Novosibirsk, Russia) "The Perspectives of the Use of Water in Supercritical State for the Development of Green Energetics"; and E. Karakhanov (Moscow, Russia) "Tandem Reactions in Petrochemistry and Biomass Processing—Realization of the Principles of Green Chemistry." About half of the program consisted of oral presentations by young participants.

The Conference on Chemical Technology and Biotechnology of New Materials and Products included three main topics:

  • fundamental problems of chemical technology and biotechnology
  • new inorganic materials, coatings, and products
  • new organic and hybrid materials, coatingsn and products

Round table discussions during the ICA-2012 were also very successful. Tatsumi presented the activities of IUPAC at the Round Table on Green Chemistry: Global Challenges—Request for Innovations, moderated by N. Tarasova. The discussion dealt with the possibility for green chemistry to become a driver of the development of chemistry and related sectors in Russia to improve competitiveness of Russian industry after joining the World Trade Organization. Another topic was the concept of Innovative Technological Cluster, presented by Alexander Chikunov (Rostock Group, Russia), that will be created in Russia to maintain and develop the ideas of green chemistry. Another important presentation was made via Skype by Colleen Kohlsaat (director of Global Environmental Sustainability, San Francisco, California, USA) on "Building Sustainability into Business: A Journey." She described Levi Strauss & Co's Roadmap to Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals.

The many possibilities for education and enlightenment about green chemistry was the subject of the Round Table on Innovative Educational and Enlightenment Programs in the Field of Green Chemistry; Inclusion of the Elements of Green Chemistry into General Chemistry Courses, the Promotion of Green Chemistry Ideology through Internet and Mass-Media." Moderated by V. Lunin and N. Tarasova and attended by journalists from the popular science press, the round table underlined that the quality of education in Russia has been declining, and that education in the field of green chemistry is driven predominantly by enthusiasts and volunteers, such as N. Tarasova and V. Lunin. More attention has to be given to this problem because of the great economic, environmental, and human benefits that could be provided by the wide adoption of green chemistry principles.

The 4th International Chemical Assembly: Green Chemistry'2012 was very successful, attracted numerous visitors, and promoted the ideas of green chemistry in Russian society. As Martyn Polyakoff (Nottingham University, UK) underlined in his greeting on the exhibition's website, "Green chemistry could become the single way to satisfy the needs of future generations in chemical products. New technology of green chemistry will become the base of the future development of Russia as well as the world in whole."
