Project

Inorganic Chemistry Division (II)
and
Chemical Nomenclature and Structure Representation Division (VIII)

Number: 1999-001-1-200 [ 2/1/99 ]

Title: Nomenclature of Inorganic Chemistry - Revised 'Red Book' - Part I

Coordinator(s): N.G. Connelly - Access to list of members

Remarks: All members of CNIC will be involved in the project

Completion Date: 2005 - project completed

Objective:
To update and rationalize the current Red Book ( RBI - Recommendations 1990), making it consistent with current nomenclature practice, particularly with CNOC. Simplify in some areas to make RBI a widely used Handbook (cross referencing to more detailed publications, e.g. as planned for the boranes, and other Pure Appl. Chem. publications, and to other books, such as Red Book - Part II).

Progress:
Project begun Summer '98, with 2 years' duration. The production of the book will be iterative with detailed comments from CNIC members on all chapters required to ensure consistency throughout. Comments from the chemical community will be welcome.

'Names for inorganic radicals' published in Pure Appl. Chem., 72(3), 437-446, 2000, will form the basis for a revised section on radicals.

April 2004 - A complete draft has been submitted to public review comments until 31 August 2004 > see provisional recommendations

Sep 2005 - Project completed - Book published by RSC, 2005 [ISBN 0 85404 438 8]
