Macromolecular Division (IV)

Number: 2002-048-1-400

Title: Compendium of macromolecular terminology and nomenclature (The Purple Book), 2nd Edition

Task Group
Chairman:
T. Wilks

Members: M. Barn, R.G. Gilbert, M. Hess, R.G. Jones, J. Kahovec, T. Kitayama, P. Kratochvil, W. Val Metanomski, R.F.T. Stepto, and W. J. Work

Objective:
Reissue of "The Purple Book" in an updated and enlarged version to replace the 1991 version (now obsolete and out-of-print).

Description:
All the chapters in this second edition of the Purple Book are official recommendations already published in PAC. An 'Introduction' and 'Guide' will be e
xceptions, as they are intended to be abridged, more readable versions of those recommendations; these chapters should be agreed on by the Subcommittee on Macromolecular Terminology and the Division President.

Progress:

Dec 2008 - Project completed - book titled "Compendium of Polymer Terminology and Nomenclature - IUPAC Recommendations 2008" published by RSC, 2009 [ISBN 978-0-85404-491-7].

This new edition of the "Purple Book" collects into a single volume the most important position papers on the nomenclature and terminology of several types of polymers, such as Regular Single-Strand Organic Polymers, Regular Double-Strand (Ladder and Spiro) Organic Polymers, and Irregular Single-Strand Organic Polymers. The scope has been extended to include papers on terminology for polymers. It is a handy compendium for scientists and is invaluable for those professionals working in this field.
