Young Ambassadors for Chemistry

A new project recommended by the IUPAC Committee on Chemistry Education (CCE) has been approved, which aims to enhance the public understanding of chemistry. The project is intended to reach teachers and students in regions with strong CCE representatives, including Taiwan, Russia and the Balkans, Argentina, and South Africa. The goal of the project is to train teachers and provide resources to develop the communication skills of young people and teach them to be young ambassadors for chemistry.

This poster, by Rikako Yoshida (Age 10) of Japan, was one of the winning entries in the “It’s a Chemical World Poster Competition,” organized by SAW and IUPAC.

The project will be carried out in partnership with Science Across the World <www.scienceacross.org>, which is a successful global science education program. SAW, which is active in 90 countries, encourages communication and shared learning by young people (10-16) on important scientific issues of public interest. SAW established methods for exchanging ideas and information between schools all over the world.

GlaxoSmithKline supports the SAW program and will sponsor this specific project. The project will also utilize the networks of the British Council and the FACT (Forum for the support and development of Content and language integrated Teaching) Network (1035 participants from 40 countries) in order to communicate good practice among the global teaching community.

This project builds on the highly successful collaboration between IUPAC and SAW on a 2003 global poster competition for children, featured on the cover of the Nov-Dec 2003 Chemistry International <www.iupac.org/publications/ci/2003/2506/1_schoen.html>.

The program will involve the following steps:

  1. translation of the materials into the languages (e.g., Mandarin, Russian) to be used in the four regions
  2. local workshop for training teachers, followed by local workshops in which trained teachers train more teachers and Young Ambassadors for Chemistry
  3. Young Ambassadors for Chemistry run local public awareness events
  4. a conference of Young Ambassadors for Chemistry in which they present their work, products, and research to their peers

Coordination of the first workshop in Taipei, Taiwan, started in June 2004. Prof Mei-Hung Chiu and Lida Schoen are actively engaged in arranging the collaboration, while the close partnership with the Taiwanese Chemical Society is highly appreciated.
The task group includes Mei-Hung Chiu and Jen Jang Sheu from Taiwan, Natalia Tarasova from Russia, Norma Nudelman from Argentina, John Bradley and Charmaine Klein from South Africa, and Anthony D. Ashmore and Keith Kelly from the United Kingdom.
