volume of Macromolecular Symposia contains articles
of the invited speakers at the IUPAC-sponsored International
Symposium on “Radical Polymerization: Kinetics and Mechanism”
held in Il Ciocco (Italy) during the week 3–8 September
2006. (See report, page 28)
This symposium was the fourth within the series of so-called
SML conferences, which are the major scientific forum for
addressing kinetic and mechanistic aspects of free-radical
polymerization and of controlled radical polymerization.
The symposium comprised five major themes:

- Heterogeneous polymerization
- Controlled radical polymerization
- Polymer reaction engineering
- Polymer characterization

The
synthesis and processing of polymer materials have been advanced
in many research works to increase their performance under
mechanical stress and in various chemical and thermal conditions.
Recently, there has been increasing interest in developing
polymer materials with many functional properties such as
electro-conductivity, piezoelectricity, heat and weather resistance,
super-absorbance, and permeability. These high-performance
or high-functional materials are replacing aluminum and other
structural metals in certain electronic and optical applications
and in computers. Novel methods for controlling polymer structure
and characterization, novel architectures for polymers, and
novel concepts for nano-scale materials are leading to these
new applications.
This issue of Macromolecular Symposia is devoted
to papers from the POLYCHAR-14 World Forum on Advanced Materials,
held at Nara Women’s University in Nara City, Japan,
April 17–22, 2006. The papers demonstrate the spectacular
advances in polymer synthesis, processing, manufacturing,
and properties.

issue of Macromolecular Symposia contains selected papers
presented at the 8th International Symposium on Polymers for
Advanced Technologies (PAT 2005) held in Budapest in September
2005. Polymer technologies used in the pharmaceutical and
biomedical fields, such as photo-electronics, environmental
biodegradable systems, and specific composites, are increasingly
interrelated. As this collection of papers shows, the following
advancements were the result of interdisciplinary research:
