IUPAC had a booth in the exhibition hall during the entire Congress. The display was managed by Erin Carter from the IUPAC Secretariat (center), with the help of four young volunteers (in the 'red shirts', from L to R): Haijin Zhu, Anmin Cao, Guohui Liu (Joy), Zhinan Zhang. On the right is Maria Wang from the Chinese Chemical Society; she was the assistant to the Congress Secretary and oversaw the organization of the congress exhibition.

GA attendees peruse the Project Place posters. The exhibit demonstrated
how most of the work IUPAC does is channeled though the project system.
If you missed the display in Biejing, it is now online at <www.iupac.org/symposia/

The Gallium - if you have not seen it, it is new to you! The Gallium was a newsletter published for IUPAC's 2005 GA. It includes plenty of miscellaneous information and reminders about dates and places for the
various events happening in Beijing. For archives purposes, it is now
online at <www.iupac.org/symposia/
conferences/ga05>

After the GA and the Congress, I (FM) had a chance to visit a friend and former colleague from graduate school, Zhigang Shuai. Zhigang is now at the Institute of Chemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and he offered me a tour of the Institute and an opportunity to meet with his group. Around the dinner table we talked about the experience of graduate school and the expectations of these young researchers.

Megane Rosborough and Peter Mahaffy (Vice Chairman of the Committee on Chemistry Education and Chairman of PUC). Megane worked with Peter and his task group on a project titled "Public Understanding of Science: Identifying IUPAC's Niche." To make the most of the week-long event and
share their findings with a large number of people, they managed to have
a poster on the Project Place, another at the Congress, and a discussion
session well attended by more than 50 people. See project web page for details <http://www.iupac.org/projects/2004/2004-047-1-050.html>
