* IUPAC Poster
Prizes
As a way to encourage young chemists, IUPAC decided to develop a general
and widespread program by which poster prizes will be awarded at
conferences.

* Medicinal Chemistry
Drugs for the treatment of central nervous system and cardiovascular
diseases, chemotherapeutics, combinatorial chemistry and high-throughput
screening, molecular modeling, peptides and peptidomimetics, and
pharmaceutical biotechnology are all important and contemporary topics
that were debated during at the Polish- Austrian- German- Hungarian-
Italian Joint Meeting on Medicinal Chemistry which took place in Kraków,
Poland, from 15-18 October 2003. The meeting was organized under the
auspices of IUPAC and the European Federation of Medicinal Chemistry,
and was a very successful scientific event and an excellent opportunity
to exchange ideas and introduce the most recent research in the field
of
medicinal chemistry.
The full texts of the plenary and invited lectures have been published
in Pure and Applied Chemistry.

* Analytical Chemistry
in the Southern and Eastern Africa
The inaugural conference for the Southern and Eastern Africa Network
of
Analytical Chemists (SEANAC) was held at the Gaborone Sun Hotel, in
Gaborone, Botswana, from 7-10 July 2003. The theme of SEANACs
inaugural
conference was networking for regional prosperity, and at
least 20
different countries from within Africa were represented as well as North
America, Europe, and the Middle East. This conference followed
preconference workshops that were held at the University of Botswana.
Solid-phase extraction sample preparation and chemometrics were among
the topic of preconference workshops, as well as presenting and
publishing scientific data and mentorship.
A collection of lectures presented at this first SEANAC meeting has
been
published in Pure and Applied Chemistry.

* Electronic Phenomena
in Organic Solids
Various aspects of molecular materials, liquid crystals, organized
structures of macromolecules and supramolecules, properties of
nanostructures and materials such as charge carrier generation,
transport, trapping and recombination, photoelectrical phenomena,
electroluminescence, molecular electronics, nonlinear optical phenomena,
photorefractivity, optical switching, data recording and storage are
all
included in this most recent Volume 212 of Macromolecular Symposia.
The
papers presented as main and special lectures and posters, collected
in
this volume, provide the substantial account of the 9th International
Conference Electrical and Related Properties of Organic Solids,
organized in Prague, in July 2002.
