Analytical Chemistry Division (V)

SUBCOMMITTEE ON SOLUBILITY AND EQUILIBRIUM DATA

Number: 2005-006-1-500

Title: Mutual solubility of alcohols and water
(update of SDS Vol 15)

Series: Solubility Data Series; editor-in-chief: Mark Salomon

Task Group
Chairman:
Andrzej Maczynski

Members: Marian Goral, Barbara Wisniewska-Goclowska, David Shaw, and Mark Salomon

Completion Date: 2007 - project completed

Objective:
This project will update and re-evaluate solubility data for all alcohols with water. These systems were previously treated in Volume 15 of the Solubility Data Series, which was published in 1984 and is now out of date and out of print. The results of this work will be prepared in the standard format of the IUPAC-NIST Solubility Data Series for publication in the Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data and for inclusion in a web-accessible database being prepared by the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Description:
Under the direction of the Subcommittee on Solubility and Equilibrium Data (SSED) of the Analytical Chemistry Division, the IUPAC Solubility Data Project (SDP) compiles and critically evaluates data on chemical solubility and disseminates the resulting information to the widest possible range of users by traditional (printed on paper) and electronic (web-accessible database) means.

The systems to be covered by this project fit within the priority focus area identified in the phantom proposal, Solubility Related to Industrial Processes. Alcohol-water solubilities are important to many industrial processes. Because of the importance of these systems they were treated early in the SDP. The resulting volume (SDS 15) was published 20 years ago and is now both out of date and out of print.

This project will update the previous volumes by compiling new data from approximately 50 published sources and reevaluate all systems where this is appropriate. The updated volume will include solubility data for systems of benzyl alcohol and its derivatives with water, which were omitted from Volume 15.

Progress:
> May 2006 report update (pdf file - 18KB)
