Preface

The IUPAC International Symposium on Macromolecular Condensed State, ISMCS'96, was held from August 20 to August 25, 1996, at the Fragrant Hill Hotel, Beijing. China. The Symposium was organized by the Polymer Division of the Chinese Chemical Society and was cosponsored by the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), State Science and Technology Commission, China, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Chinese Chemical Society and the National Natural Science Foundation of China. The symposium was attended by 78 scientists from 7 countries and quite a number of young scientists from China. A total of 66 papers were presented at the symposium including 13 invited lectures.

The presentation dealt with a rather wide scope of the physics of macromolecular condensed state, as can be seen from the following main topics of the symposium:

1. Polymeric liquid crystalline state
2. Chain entanglement in the amorphous state
3. The nature of glass transition and sub-Tg annealing
4. Orientation, relaxation and crystallization from amorphous state
5. Single-chain particles - glasses and single crystals
6. Compatibility, phase separation and crystallization of polymer blends

This symposium volume covers papers presented by 13 invited lecturers. However a few lecturers could not send in their manuscripts at scheduled time. To our regret Prof. L. Monnerie was not able to attend the symposium up to the last moment. A short abstract of his paper is included in this volume.

At the conclusion of the symposium, in the addresses given by Professor Qian, Professor Fischer and Professor Windle, they all expressed that the symposium was a successful one of high scientific level. Many new experimental results, new concepts and ideas were actively and freely discussed inside and outside the lecture room. Many oral presentations given by some young Chinese scientists have deeply impressed all the participants. To Chinese scientists this symposium was particularly valuable to have such a fine opportunity of exposing their research achievements to the internationally well known experts in this field and of nourishing and encouraging their research efforts through face-to-face scientific interactions.

Here, on behalf of the Symposium Chairman Professor Qian, and myself as this symposium editor and all the members of the Symposium Organizing Committee, I would like to share this space to express our deep appreciation to all the lecturers and participants for their fine presentations, their enthusiastic and valuable discussion, and cooperation.

Acknowledge ments are cordially made also for the generous financial support by IUPAC and the four Chinese organizations stated in the first paragraph.
